SneakPeeq Is The Social Shopping Mall Where As You Shop, The Price Drops

It's no secret that e-commerce is growing like gangbusters. Last year alone, consumers spent a $142 billion on online retail spending. SneakPeeq, a startup launching today at TechCrunch Disrupt, aims to capitalize on this booming market, but adds a social twist. SneakPeeq gets high end fashion brands to sell in season or upcoming items on the site, and somewhat aims to replicate the experience of shopping for items in a retail store. So similar to the way you flip over a price tag to look at the cost of at item at a store, SneakPeeq doesn't tell you the price instantly when you visit a product's landing page. You click a "Peeq" button to find the price, and every time you "Peeq" at the price it goes down, but once somebody buys the item, the offer goes away.

7 Steps to a Great Customer Service | Angel Business Advisors

A business cannot sustain competitive advantage for long time based on product and price alone. Competition eventually will find a way to beat you on that game. Competitive advantage built on customer service, however, cannot easily be copied. For proof look no further than Zappos.com. Here is an E-commerce company that sells shoes, of all the items, on the Internet. However, with a laser like focus on customer service it is selling a billion dollar worth of them annually!

After consulting with number of small business owners over past several years we have come up with a 7-step process that companies need to adopt to achieve the success enjoyed by Zappos. It will not be easy to follow these principles all the time and success will not come overnight. However, when you do master them you will have a lasting success that your competitors will find difficult to beat.

  1. Hire employees with great people skills
Your employees play a pivotal role when it comes to providing great customer service. After all, they are the ones who face customers everyday and interact with them. You need to focus on the attitude when hiring employees. You can always teach skills to your employees; but cannot adjust their attitudes. Spend time in evaluating them before making final hiring decision and if you find that they are not a good fit for your company; don?t wait too long to let them go. As one of the HR consultant I met this week said ? ?be slow to hire; but quick to fire.?
  2. Set an Example
While employees will make customer service happen; it is ultimately owners? responsibility to set an example by treating your employees and customers well yourself. Monkeys see, monkeys do! If you are not willing to do treat your employees the way you want them to treat customers do not expect good results.
  3. Measure it
You cannot improve something that you cannot measure. You need to determine the metrics that will help you understand how you are doing in customer service. Different industries will have different ways of measuring it; but there are some common measures that everyone can use ? customer complaints, number of repeat customers and so on.
  4. Seek Customer Feedback
In addition to using hard numbers you need to seek informal feedback and hear stories from the customers first-hand. The numbers can only tell you so much. The stories will shed light on the underlying problems affecting the metrics.
  5. Communicate, communicate, communicate
We cannot overemphasize the importance of communicating with your customers. Just as in marriage; lack of communication can lead to mistrust and eventually to separation. The Internet has made it easier than ever to communicate with your customers on a regular basis. If you are not utilizing social media tools you are missing out on great opportunity to improve customer satisfaction.
  6. Under promise, over deliver
This is the basic principle of customer satisfaction. Do not promise something that you cannot deliver. Even better ? delight your customer by over delivering on your promise.
  7. Build a customer-centric culture
A great customer service culture should permeate throughout your company. Customer service is not a department, it?s an attitude. Once you have integrated customer service in all aspects of your business it becomes second nature to provide great customer service. We know, it is easier said than done; but it can be done.

If you have achieved success with customer service let us know how you have done it. Which principles did you find most useful?

How To Start A Computer Consulting Business ...

To start a computer consulting business, first you should have the preliminary knowledge of computer systems. Other important requirements to start a computer consulting business are powerful problem solving skills and of course an inner feeling of helping the people in difficulty. Here are some useful tips to start computer-consulting business.

Make Survey Regarding the Distance and Size of Prospective Clients:
Make a survey that how far are the potential clients living from your office. You should be able to reach them with in an hour or so. This is very important factor particularly from the point of networking services. Also, gather information regarding the size of the prospective customers. Ideally, you should start with the clients those having between 10 and 50 computers. If we talk in terms of the annual turn over, the client should have annual sales between $1 million and $10 million.

Client should be Serious about IT Requirements:
Before you start computer consulting for clients make sure how serious they are about the information technology. A prospective customer, who does not have his own dedicated server and accessing the Internet using dial up lines, is not suitable for consultation. However, those who are interested in focusing more on their IT requirements are definitely ideal clients.

Far Better Than Traditional IT Jobs:
Being a computer consultant is definitely more rewarding than joining a traditional job in any IT company. Because in traditional IT jobs, there are several hurdles in the progress those are not under your control. For example, you may not grow as fast as you deserve because of incompetent colleagues, dull management and a system where seniors get the priority whether they are competent or not. On the contrary, when you start computer consulting business these things comes under your control. For example, if your colleague is not able to keep pace with you then you are always free to part with him and invite some better people to join hands. So, if you have the talent and ambition, no one can stop your income from skyrocketing.

Increasing Scope:
The scope for the computer consulting business is increasing with the growth of information technology. It is very difficult to run any business today without using computers. Almost any business organization is looking for some kind of help regarding computers. You also have the option whether you want to become an outsource consultant or internal employee. Either way you are choosing a winning career with bright chances of success and profitability. Furthermore, the computer technology is changing at very fast rate. This fast change is also creating new and new opportunities for the computer consulting business.

Jackie Evancho: Chasing Her Dreams

Jackie Evancho

Last fall, a big young voice captured the attention of NBC's America's Got Talent. That big voice is coming from a small young lady ? Jackie Evancho.

At just 11 years old, she was the runner-up on the show, but she garnered millions of YouTube views and a record deal. Her classical crossover album Dream With Me is out next month.

Jackie started singing around the age of 8 after falling in love with The Phantom Of The Opera.

"I went to see it in theaters and I loved it so much," she tells All Things Considered host Michelle Norris. "When I got home, I started singing the songs around the house and my mom thought I was really good, so she asked me if I wanted to do a talent competition. And I said 'yes, definitely.' "

The newly found fame has Jackie on the road more often than not, but she's OK with the traveling since she's chasing her dream.

"I do feel like I see a plane seat more than I see my own bed," says Jackie. "If I want this to be my dream, I'm going to have to just suck it up and get used to the fact that I'm not seeing home as much as I did."

And while Jackie is not seeing home as much as she once used to, she's trying to stay a kid and not looking too far down the road.

"At this point I try not to think about that, because I think of how horrible my voice could turn into or how great my voice could turn into," she says. "I sometimes get scared of growing up because I really love being young, being little. It's fun. A lot funner than being an adult."

But Jackie is still an 11-year-old who has fears and dreams like every other preteen.

"I'm concerned that if I get older, people aren't going to enjoy me as much as when I was younger. I had a great voice for a little girl, but my voice can't get any bigger when I'm older," she says. "When I know that I've made it, it's when I'll be standing on a red carpet and there's a whole bunch of paparazzi around me. That's when I know I've made it."

Best & Worst of Cannes: From the Palme d'Or to the Palme D'oh!

Cannes is two weeks of amazing fashions, A-list stars, colorful flameouts and, oh yeah, films. With the festival now a wrap in the South of France, it's time look back on the best and worst of the fest.

As expected, the Brad Pitt and Sean Penn starring Tree of Life, directed by Terrence Malick, won the festival's big award, the Palme D'or. But Cannes is about way more than just the official winners list (though of course we've got that below, natch). So get ready for all the scandalous moments, sparkliest gowns and surprising star turns on the jump.

And...Action!

MORE: Total Cannes coverage

Worst Standup Comedian, Lars von Trier: The oft-controversial director's Hitler material killed?his chances of getting any good press at the fest. His jokes about Nazis while promoting his film Melancholia made his stars squirm, enraged Jewish rights groups and got him banned from the festival. Plus he received an unwanted viral endorsement from Der Fuhrer. We're giving him the Palm D'oh!

Best Actress, Kirsten Dunst, She not only won the festival's actual Best Actress award (see below) for her role in Lars von Trier's Melancholia, she showed incredible range and dexterity while trying to stay poised as the director's "I'm a Nazi" train went off the rails during that ill-fated press conference.

Worst Topless Sun Bather, Mel Gibson: Literally letting it all hang out, the actor somehow forgot about the existence of paparazzi when he ducked the press conference for The Beaver and decided to do some tanning on his hotel balcony. GTL...not!

Best A-List Tag Team, Brangelina: Brad Pitt's mega buzz-film, The Tree of Life, may have gotten a mixed reception, but he and Angelina Jolie caused a stir wherever they went, amping up the A-list energy, fashion excitement and generally causing Panda-monium. What's not to love?

Worst Seat in Cannes, Michelle Rodriguez: OK, we kid. Because we love. The ex-Lost badass didn't look half bad while showing off her backside in a revealing swimsuit.

Best Unexpectedly Perfect Timing, Sean Penn's This Must Be the Place Press Conference: Following hot on the heels of von Trier's banishment from Cannes, Penn's crazy-haired rock star Nazi hunter movie became the momentary feel-good hit of the festival.

Best Bar in Cannes, Bar Refaeli: If looking good is the best revenge (and we think it is), Bar Refaeli is a big winner over her ex, Leo DiCaprio. Even if Leo was also making the scene, yacht-style with Blake Lively, Bar was not only red-carpet ready like this and this and this, she was also twit-pic bikini ready. Which makes her the best, bar none.

That is, of course, unless you want to count the actual prizes awarded by the Cannes jury led by Robert DeNiro (along with Uma Thurman, Jude Law and others). Without further adieu, here they are:

Complete List of 2011 Cannes Festival Winners:

Palme d'Or: The Tree of Life by Terrence Malick

Grand Prix (Tie): The Kid with a Bike, by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne; Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, by Nuri Bilge Ceylan

Best Director: Nicolas Winding Refn, Drive

Best Screenplay: Joseph Cedar, Hearat Shulayim

Best First Feature: Las Acacias, by Pablo Gorgelli

Special Jury Prize: Polisse, by Maiwenn

Best Actress: Kirsten Dunst, Melancholia

Best Actor: Jean Dujarin, The Artist

Palme d'Or (Short Film): Cross Country, by Marina Viroda

Product portal, tweets suggest 'Thrive' moniker for Toshiba's Honeycomb tablet

"What's in a name?" We'd ask Toshiba, but the company hasn't been able to give its upcoming 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet one in five months -- or has it? If you'll recall, Toshiba registered the name Thrive for trademark and related domain names last month, and now evidence is mounting that all of that work wasn't in vain. TabletCommunity learned days ago that a commercial for the device was in production via some chatty actors on Twitter; soon after, the site also uncovered a parking page for the slate on Toshiba's website, albeit with little more than the aforesaid name categorized under "Tablets." It's a welcome update in light of the vapid titles "Antares" and "ANT300" that had also seemed possible, and once word spills of US pricing and availability, perhaps we can focus on more pressing matters... you know, like benchmarks.

[Thanks, Jakob]

Intel and Microsoft Nip and Growl Over Windows' Race to ARMs

An Intel executive has stated that when Windows 8 arrives, the versions of the Microsoft OS running on ARM-based chips won't be able to run legacy applications. Microsoft called that statement inaccurate, though it did not clarify further. Is Intel feeling the heat now that Microsoft -- and possibly Apple's MacBook line -- are leaning toward its arch rival in the mobile world?

Two of the biggest names in the high-tech industry -- Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) -- have begun duking it out over the issue of tablet computers.

Intel kicked off the row Wednesday when Renee James, head of its software business, mentioned that Microsoft will make multiple versions of Windows 8, four of which will work on processors from ARM (Nasdaq: ARMHY). Those four, according to James, won't run legacy applications.

That statement, made at Intel's Santa Clara headquarters, sparked speculation that perhaps enterprises and consumers using Windows 8 tablets based on ARM processors would be unable to use their existing Windows apps.

The problem escalated when another Intel executive, Senior Vice President Tom Kilroy, commented that, in essence, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) helps shape the chip giant's future.

Was that another slap at Microsoft? Was it intentional? Is Intel preparing investors for a possible fall-off in demand as Microsoft develops versions of Windows to run on other processors?

The Possible Root of the Problem

ARM is -- how best to say this? -- putting the squeeze on Intel.

Microsoft stated at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January that its upcoming Windows 8 operating system will support ARM-based system on a chip (SoC) architectures from Nvidia (Nasdaq: NVDA), Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) and Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN), as well as SOC designs from Intel and AMD (NYSE: AMD).

At the show, Microsoft demonstrated Windows 8 running on new SoC platforms from various manufacturers.

It also demoed Microsoft Office running natively on ARM processors. Further, Microsoft pledged to support the widest variety of hardware platforms and form factors.

Meanwhile, Intel's Atom processors are facing stiff competition in the mobile devices market from -- you guessed it -- ARM, although the chip giant is focusing strongly on the mobile sector.

Also, there are persistent rumors that Apple may be thinking of moving off Intel processors to ARM.

"Intel is betting that the future businesses, particularly large enterprises, would prefer to buy x86-based tablets that run the legacy apps they use today," Tom Mainelli, a research manager at IDC, told TechNewsWorld.

"Plus, today's IT staff understand how to roll out and manage x86-based machines," Mainelli said. "They just don't have much experience supporting ARM-based devices."

Intel, then, may be seeking to shore up its position as it comes under attack from ARM.

"One of the key strengths of the x86 architecture is backward compatibility with older software versions, and Intel will leverage that to full effect to guard against ARM-based chip vendors," Sravan Kundojjala, a senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, told TechNewsWorld.

Reworking Legacy Apps

It is possible to salvage legacy-based apps so they can be accessed by ARM-based devices through rewriting the apps.

Existing apps will need to be rewritten or at least recompiled to run on ARM, IDC's Mainelli stated. Alternatively, the ARM devices will have to run some sort of x86 emulation, but that "typically doesn't make for a great user experience."

However, it's not clear whether a massive rewrite will indeed be necessary because "Microsoft hasn't finalized things yet," Al Hilwa, a program director at IDC, told TechNewsWorld.

However, whenever something significantly new is introduced, the issue of managing existing apps comes up, Hilwa pointed out.

"Providing emulation layers, migration tools and other approaches that can reduce the pain and allow apps to harness new capabilities is typically part of the roadmap offering," he explained.

Microsoft has a massive PC developer ecosystem it can harness if it needs to rework existing legacy apps, Hilwa remarked.

Starting With a Clean Slate?

Another option is to develop new apps from scratch for the ARM platform instead.

"Microsoft will need a humongous effort to prepare its legacy software ecosystem to switch to an ARM-based version of Windows," Strategy Analytics' Kundojjala said.

"I think it will take a clean-slate approach instead and try to build a new software ecosystem from scratch," Kundojjala speculated. "This may take time, but it'll be a sensible decision for Microsoft."

The Sound of Silence

James' statement about Windows for ARM tablets was met with criticism Thursday. Microsoft spokesperson Mark Martin characterized it as "factually inaccurate and unfortunately misleading."

"From the first demonstrations of Windows on SoC, we have been clear about our goals and have emphasized that we are at the technology demonstration stage," Martin told TechNewsWorld. "As such, we have no further details or information at this time."

Intel's response to the criticism was minimal.

"The number four was arbitrary," Intel spokesperson Suzy Ramirez told TechNewsWorld. "It was simply used to help demonstrate a point. Beyond that, we are not commenting further on the statements from yesterday at this time."

Neither response tackles the question of whether or not ARM-based Windows 8 tablets will indeed be unable to run legacy Windows applications.

Microsoft "didn't say what part of the statement was erroneous, just that the Intel executive got it wrong," IDC's Mainelli pointed out.

Whether the two will continue to dance around each other and throw jabs is uncertain. However, it's unlikely that this will cause a permanent rift between them as they have been collaborating for years.

The Greatest Kung Fu Movies of All Times

There have been hundreds of Kung Fu movies ever made; we have been treated with fight-scenes of a new genre, no guns, no bombs, just kicks flying out in the air. But which one among those heart-pumping movies are the greatest? Let us find out. The Greatest Kung Fu Movies of Bruce Lee:Bruce Lee is the master Kung Fu fighter, there is no doubt about. His untimely demise has left a hole in the martial arts world though his legacy will remain with fans around the world.Way of the Dragon This was the only film that was written and directed by Brice Lee that he was able to completely finish. It also starred Chuck Norris.Enter the Dragon The last movie Bruce Lee was able to finish before he died. Chinese Connection (Fist of Fury) The story was set in Shanghai 1930?s while the Japanese was still in control of the whole area.Fist of Fury (The Big Boss) Set in Thailand, Lee plays someone who took revenge for his cousin?s disappearance and on the way he came up against the Big Boss of a drug trafficking ring.Game of Death Bruce Lee died before the movie was finished so director Robert Clouse made do with a stand in. The Greatest Kung Fu Movies of Jackie Chan:Jackie Chan came into popularity after Bruce Lee, though they share the same love for the martial arts, their movies somehow differ in plots. While Lee?s movies concentrate on the dramatic side of the stories, Chan?s movies on the other hand, took on the comedy side. But both were able to penetrate the western world with their unique styles.Drunken Master It was probably one of the best films he has ever made; he was able to rise as a good comedic martial arts actor with this film. This was done in Cantonese. Police Story This is another Cantonese film from Chan; here he plays a cop (first time) who took down a drug lord only to be framed for another cop?s murder.Super Cop This was filmed in Hong Kong but made it internationally. Chan played a Hong Kong detective who needs to stop a drug czar.Rush Hour This was done in English and was shot in the States. Chan plays a cop (as usual) who worked with an FBI agent to rescue a kidnapped girl. The Tuxedo Not a cop this time but a chauffeur who discovered that his mater?s tuxedo has super natural powers. A hilarious film, no doubt. Other Greatest Kung Fu Movies:Shaolin Temple This film starred Jet Li, another Kung Fu master; this is his debut film and this film made history when the original Shaolin Temple was re-opened after the film?s showing. The Seven Samurai One of the greatest epic Kung Fu movies of all time and director Akira Kurosawa?s best work ever. It featured superb acting performances with emotions running high. Ong Bak Martial Arts expert Tony Jaa brought to the big screen a new Kung Fu style very much different from that of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. Definitely something new for the new breed of Kung Fu fans.

Ari Marcopoulos

Thurston Moore's introspective new album Demolished Thoughts comes out May 24.

When news surfaced last year that Thurston Moore had hired Beck to produce his new album, it was easy to imagine their collaboration taking one of two paths: They could go loud, or they could go quiet. Considering the body of work the two iconoclastic musicians have amassed over the years, either would have made sense.

For nearly 30 years with Sonic Youth, Moore has created everything from eccentric pop tunes to lengthy rock-outs and free-form noise experimentation, and he's earned the freedom to explore his esoteric musical interests in various side projects. Similarly, Beck has been known to toggle back and forth between rambunctious, hip-hop-infused rock and moody, cosmic folk.

For Demolished Thoughts ? out May 24 ? Moore went the latter route, eschewing the tension and noise for an introspective acoustic sound. His songs here are about as lyrically earnest and evocative as anything he's written. "Simple pleasures strike like lighting, scratches spell her name / Thunder demons swipe her halo and then they run away / But I know better than to let her go," he sings in "Benediction," an ode to the stability of love. At the song's center are layered guitar textures formed around open tunings that ring out underneath Moore's cool, composed vocal delivery.

While Beck's influence is subtle, his presence is felt. Demolished Thoughts is, in some sense, the twin of Beck's own album Sea Change ? if not in theme (Beck chronicled the ravages of a failed relationship), then at least in terms of existential contemplation and sonic template. The music is both hauntingly ethereal, as in "Space," and aggressively impassioned, as in the slack-stringed acoustic rocker "Circulation," which swells into a dissonant vamp of strings, thundering toms and power chords.

Demolished Thoughts was written over a two-year period and recorded this past fall and winter at Beck's Los Angeles studio and in Northampton, Mass., where Moore lives with his wife, Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon. It re-teams Moore with the violinist Samara Lubelski, who brings a swooning quality to every song. Together with Mary Lattimore's exquisite harp, songs like "Blood Never Lies" and "Illuminate" capture a sort of sprawling autumnal folksiness. The record also features Bill Nace on guitar, as well as Beck regulars Bram Inscore on bass, Joey Waronker on drums, and even Beck himself. The end result is a beautifully nuanced album that not only reveals a personal side to Thurston Moore's songwriting, but also sits alongside his strongest solo work.

Patients with small kidney tumors are more likely to be offered treatment options based on surgeons? case volume and type of practice than on tumor characteristics, a Mayo Clinic study has found. Fellowship-trained surgeons who practice in academic medical centers with high volumes of patients with kidney tumors were 70 to 80 percent more likely to follow American Urological Association (AUA) guidelines by recommending partial nephrectomy. Surgeons in private practice who see few patients with kidney tumors more often offered radical nephrectomy: removal of the entire kidney.

Mayo Clinic researchers presented their findings during the AUA Annual Meeting in Washington.

?There is wide variability in how renal masses are managed. We must recognize these discrepancies may be due to different perceptions of technical feasibility in performing a partial nephrectomy,? says Christopher Weight, M.D., of Mayo Clinic?s Department of Urology. ?What we?re encouraging is a discussion between physicians and patients about all options available. Some patients may benefit from a referral to surgeons with more experience with renal tumors.?

The study shows that as kidney tumors get larger and more complex, all surgeons tend to offer a radical nephrectomy. However, the tumor complexity that may result in one surgeon recommending total removal of the kidney may be well below a more experienced surgeon?s threshold. Approximately 45,000 Americans require radical or partial nephrectomy each year.

The Snows of Kilimanjaro ((Les Neiges du Kilimanjaro))

A Diaphana Distribution release of an Agat Films & Cie, La Friche Belle de Mai, France 3 Cinema production, with the participation of Canal Plus, Cine Cinema, France Televisions, Cineimage 5, La Banque Postale Image 4, Soficinema 7, Cofimage 22 and the support of the Alpes Provence Cote d'Azur Region, Centre National du Cinema, L'image Animee. (International sales: Films Distribution, Paris.) Produced, directed by Robert Guediguian. Screenplay, Jean-Louis Milesi, Guediguian.

With: Ariane Ascaride, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Gerard Meylan, Maryline Canto, Gregoire Leprince-Ringuet, Anais Demoustier, Adrien Jolivet, Robinson Stevenin, Karole Rocher, Julie-Marie Parmentier, Pierre Niney.

The sweetest young orphans one could possibly imagine get saved by a middle-class Marseille couple in "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," a blizzard of cloying sentiment not to be confused with Hollywood's like-titled Hemingway adaptation from 1952. Inspired by a Victor Hugo poem, French director Robert Guediguian ("The Army of Crime") returns to the small-scale work with which he began his career in 1980, ladling on the syrup in an ingratiating bid to melt bourgeois hearts. While Ariane Ascaride and Jean-Pierre Darroussin are endearing enough as the middle-aged do-gooders, the forecast calls for "Snows" to fall mainly in Gaul. Implausibly contrived to rhyme with Hugo's "How Good Are the Poor," pic has its happily marrieds turning the other cheek after they're tied up, beaten and robbed by the orphans' downtrodden older brother, Christophe (Gregoire Leprince-Ringuet). Guediguian may intend to salute, per Hugo, the goodness of the poor. However, as Christophe remains callously unrepentant for the crime (while his siblings remain merely adorable), the film favors a couple that's underemployed but sufficiently comfy to give money away. Super 16 lensing lends the obligatory hint of grit to a classy production.

Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton to Star in Vampire Pic 'Byzantium' (Cannes)

Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images

CANNES -- Oscar winning filmmaker Neil Jordan is reuniting with producer Stephen Woolley to make Byzantium, a female vampire movie with Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton as the lead bloodsuckers.

The original script is penned by Moira Buffini and details the story of a mother vampire who turns her own daughter into a vampire and the pair form a lethal partnership, sometimes posing as sisters.

The ?8 million ($11 million) budgeted movie is set to shoot in October.

Jordan and Woolley have made several movies dating back to 1984?s The Company of Wolves, based on Angela Carter?s novel.

Woolley produced Jordan?s Oscar winning The Crying Game also and last worked together on Breakfast on Pluto in 2005.

?I love the horror genre and we?ve been working on this for three or four years. I sent it to Neil and he liked the script,? Woolley said. ?We?d both recently revisited Angela Carter?s book and it was just chance that when I called [Jordan], we were thinking along the same lines.?

The original script is based on a youth theater play by Buffini but has been taken to a slightly more adult, darker level, Woolley said.

Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen?s Number 9 Films production banner is gearing up to shoot its $17 million budgeted Mike Newell directed adaptation of Charles Dickens? Great Expectations, penned by David Nicholls.

Cast includes Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes and Jeremy Irvine.

It is backed by BBC Films and the British Film Institute, which now has lottery funding duties since the end of the U.K. Film Council. It is being sold here by Hanway Films.

Along with Number 9 Films production banner partner Elizabeth Karlsen, the company is gearing up to give longtime assistant and Number 9 stalwart Joanna Laurie her first taste of filmmaking.

Laurie is producing Hyena, an alternate London cops thriller written and directed by Gerard Johnson. Billed as a police noir inspired by Jean-Pierre Melville, one of the forerunners of the French New Wave, the film is set in contemporary West London amongst the Turkish and Albanian communities of asylum seekers.

It is being developed with Film4, the broadcaster?s standalone movie-making unit and marks Johnson?s second big screen outing and will star Peter Ferdinando.

Ferdinando appeared in Johnson?s debut horror thriller, Tony, about a serial killer in a rundown suburb of London. It is being sold at the Marche du Film by Independent.
