Jon & Kate Plus 8 Editor Arrested on Child Porn Charge

William Blankinship, a TV editor who worked on TLC's Jon and Kate Plus 8 and other family-oriented reality TV, was arrested last week on child porn charges.

Blankinship, 56, has been charged with 10 counts of sex exploit of a minor, meaning he possessed photos and/or video of a minor engaged in sexual activity.

A subcontractor for Figure 8 Films, Blankenship edited such TLC shows as Jon and Kate Plus 8, its spinoff Kate Plus 8, 17 Kids and Counting and Table for 12.

No bond has been set for the accused; he is likely "under the authority of the U.S. Marshals" until trial, a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons said.

His employer wasted no time taking action. "Upon learning of the shocking allegations his employment was terminated," Figure 8 films said in a statement.

Fortunately, Blankinship was never in contact with the famous eight Gosselin kids, the 17 Duggar offspring or any other of TLC's stars, according to reports.

"At no time was this man ever in the field or in direct contact with any of the talent for any of our productions," the network said in its own statement.

Man With No Business Experience Acts Alone To Boost Business ...

Alternate title: President Runs Against Democrat Senate On Job Creation. Alternate Alternate Title: Obama Owns The Economy

(The Politico) President Barack Obama rounded out the first week of his new ?we can?t wait? campaign against Congress with the launch Friday of two initiatives aimed at boosting businesses.

Well, that?s certainly the best way to run for re-election: hose your comrades who control the Senate, making their re-election campaigns even more difficult. Remember, the Dems are defending 23 seats to the Republicans 10. Also, though the Democrats are a minority in the House, Obama?s slurring of the House hurts them.

Anyhow, what is Obama?s wonderful new idea to boost employment?

Building on orders released earlier this week to help homeowners facing foreclosure, borrowers with heavy student loan burdens and unemployed veterans, Obama ended the week by issuing memoranda calling on federal agencies to speed the transfer of government research into commercial products, and to create a website that will help businesses access information about government programs and services.

?With too many families struggling and too many businesses fighting to keep their doors open, we can?t wait for Congress to take action,? Obama said in a statement. ?Today, I am directing my administration to take two important steps to help American businesses create new products, compete in a global economy, and create jobs here at home.?

Obama, and the Politico, forgot to include exactly how any of this will decrease unemployment, spark hiring, and rev up the economy. But, it is not particularly shocking that his plans all revolve around the federal government.

One of Obama?s Friday memos calls on agencies to accelerate the process of moving new technologies developed by the government and entities funded by government to the marketplace, in part by cutting in half the time for startups to receive grants. The memo also gives federal agencies greater flexibility to collaborate with businesses and local communities. It also orders agencies to create five-year plans on commercializing research and to keep tabs on how many patents each federal lab generates.

The president?s second memo directs administration agencies to work together to create BusinessUSA, a portal website guiding businesses of all sizes to resources to help them hire, grow and manage exports. The website was a recommendation of Obama?s jobs council. It was put forward when the president announced the $447 billion American Jobs Act last month and is expected to launch within the next 90 days.

Because, as we all know, government is the only entity to have ever invented something. And creating a website run by people who, for the most part, have never worked in the private sector, never had to make a budget, never had to make a profit, is as absurd as the rest of Obama?s ideas. However, what this all means is that Obama owns this economy.

Nurse testifies Jackson asked for anesthetic (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? A nurse who treated Michael Jackson has testified the singer asked her to help him get the powerful anesthetic propofol.

Nurse practioner Cherilyn Lee told jurors Tuesday that Jackson complained he could not sleep and asked her for the drug two months before he died.

Lee says she initially didn't know about the drug, but after speaking with a doctor told the singer it was unsafe to use in his home.

Lee was called to testify by defense attorneys for Dr. Conrad Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter. Authorities say he provided the singer with the fatal dose of the drug.

Lee says Jackson told her he had received propofol during surgery but didn't mention any doctors who were involved.

She says Jackson told her propofol was the only drug that would help him sleep.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

The judge hearing the involuntary manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson's doctor blocked defense lawyers from asking about the singer's multimillion-dollar contract for his final concert series.

Defense attorneys for Dr. Conrad Murray had wanted to introduce Jackson's contract with concert giant AEG Live to show that he would be heavily indebted to the promoter if the concerts were canceled. They said Jackson would be desperate to make sure the shows continued.

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said allowing testimony about the contract might confuse jurors, who are considering whether Murray's actions caused Jackson's June 2009 death.

"This is not a contractual dispute. This is a homicide case," Pastor said.

Defense attorney Ed Chernoff told Pastor that Jackson would have been indebted to AEG Live for nearly $40 million if the shows were canceled. Chernoff contends that led Jackson to give himself a dose of the anesthetic propofol in a desperate attempt to sleep.

Prosecutors contend Murray, who has pleaded not guilty, gave the fatal dose.

Although Pastor blocked the AEG contract testimony, he will allow some testimony from Randy Phillips, the company's president and CEO. The judge said Chernoff could ask Phillips about putting together the shows, titled "This Is It," the singer's conduct during a March 2009 press conference and any issues that may have occurred with Jackson's performance of rehearsals.

Phillips is expected to testify later Tuesday, after jurors hear from Cherilyn Lee, a nurse practitioner who has said Jackson repeatedly asked her for propofol to help him sleep, but she refused.

Lee began her testimony Monday, the sixth witness that Murray's attorneys called to try to shift the blame for Jackson's death to the singer himself. Lee's testimony was briefly delayed Tuesday after she appeared flustered on the witness stand and said she had become dizzy.

Murray's team plans Tuesday to call other witnesses who they think may support that theory, including Phillips and Jackson's makeup artist and hairstylist, Karen Faye. They will also call several expert witnesses who will try to rebut the testimony of prosecution experts who said Murray was reckless and at fault in Jackson's unexpected death on June 25, 2009.

In a court filing Monday, Murray's attorneys expect Faye will testify that Jackson was distraught about completing the comeback shows.

One of the initial defense witnesses, Dr. Allan Metzger, supported prosecutors' contentions that Murray acted recklessly by giving Jackson propofol as a sleep aid and that the singer was looking forward to the show.

"He was excited," Metzger said of Jackson's demeanor during conversations and a house call in the months before the singer's death. "He was talking to me about some creative things that he was thinking about. He spoke to me about his excitement and his fear about the tour."

Metzger said Jackson felt the shows were a big obligation and he wanted to deliver stellar performances.

The doctor, who knew and treated Jackson for more than 15 years, testified the pop superstar asked him about IV medications during his house call.

On cross-examination, Metzger said he told Jackson that using any IV drugs or anesthetics to sleep was unsafe.

"You explained to him that it that was dangerous, life-threatening and should not be done outside of a hospital, correct," prosecutor David Walgren asked the doctor.

"That's correct," he replied.

"Was there any amount of money that would have convinced you to give him intravenous propofol in his house?" Walgren asked.

"Absolutely not," Metger said.

Lee was similarly against Jackson taking propofol to help him sleep. She told The Associated Press in 2009 that the singer repeatedly asked for the drug while she was treating him for nutrition and sleep issues.

"I said, `Michael, the only problem with you taking this medication' ? and I had a chill in my body and tears in my eyes three months ago ? `the only problem is you're going to take it and you're not going to wake up,'" she recalled telling Jackson.

Lee kept detailed notes of her treatments on Jackson, which she flipped through repeatedly while testifying Monday.

According to prosecutors, Murray kept no notes on his treatments on Jackson after signing on as his personal physician for the London shows.

Defense attorneys expect to conclude their case Thursday. Even if they do, jurors won't begin deliberations until next week. A judge told attorneys that he would give them the weekend to craft their closing arguments and finalize jury instructions.

(AP) ? The United States beat 10-time defending champion Cuba 12-10 Monday in the baseball semifinals at the Pan American Games.

The Americans, who won their only Pan Am Games title in 1967, led 7-0 in the third inning and stretched their advantage to 12-2 before the Cubans rallied.

Cuba has won 12 of the 15 baseball titles at the Pan Am Games, including every one between 1971 and 2007. The United States has finished second to Cuba eight times.

The Americans will face either Mexico or Canada in Tuesday's final.

Also, Yipsi Moreno set a Pan American Games record while winning the women's hammer throw for Cuba. Her toss of 75.62 meters broke her own record of 75.60 from the last games in Rio de Janeiro.

"These may be my last Pan American Games and I'm proud I'm leaving my sports career like this," Moreno said.

Marisol Romero of Mexico later won the women's 10,000 meters, and teammate Juan Barrios won the men's 5,000. There were two more track gold medals to be won Monday, including the women's pole vault.

The United States won the women's team all-around in gymnastics and Jordan Burroughs took gold in the men's 74-kilogram freestyle wrestling category.

Yuderquis Contreras of the Dominican Republic won the women's 53-kilogram category in weightlifting and Maria Escobar of Ecuador won the women's 58-kilogram class. Israel Rubio of Venezuela won the men's 69-kilogram category.

Earlier, the United States women's basketball team finished the Pan American Games with a second straight win. The 87-41 rout of Jamaica was not for a medal like usual, however. Instead, it gave them seventh place in the eight-team competition.

The women's basketball team came to Guadalajara as the favorite to defend their title. But they lost to Argentina 58-55 in their first game, then fell to Puerto Rico 75-70.

Despite beating Mexico 87-58 in the final game, the Americans still finished last in the four-team group and had to play for seventh.

"Nobody likes to lose games by one or three points," said United States forward Breanna Stewart, a 17-year-old high school student. "We all played well. Unfortunately, the results came in the final minutes and luck did not favor us."

The Americans came to Guadalajara with an inexperienced team that had only five practice sessions before the tournament opened.

"We have different styles of playing," Stewart said. "We had trouble adapting to a single style of playing, despite the good rapport we had from the beginning."

You are what you eat: Low fat diet with fish oil slowed growth of human prostate cancer cells

You are what you eat: Low fat diet with fish oil slowed growth of human prostate cancer cells

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

A low-fat diet with fish oil supplements eaten for four to six weeks prior to prostate removal slowed down the growth of prostate cancer cells -- the number of rapidly dividing cells -- in human prostate cancer tissue compared to a traditional, high-fat Western diet.

Done by researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, the short-term study also found that the men on the low-fat, fish oil supplement diet were able to change the composition of their cell membranes in both the healthy cells and the cancer cells in the prostate. They had increased levels of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil and decreased levels of omega-6 fatty acids from corn oil in the cell membranes, which may directly affect the biology of the cells, though further studies are needed, said Dr. William Aronson, the study's first author and a researcher with UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The study also found that blood obtained from patients after the low-fat, fish oil diet program slowed the growth of prostate cancer cells in a test tube as compared to blood from men on the Western diet, which did not slow cancer growth.

"The finding that the low-fat, fish oil diet reduced the number of rapidly dividing cells in the prostate cancer tissue is important because the rate at which the cells are dividing can be predictive of future cancer progression," Aronson said. "The lower the rate of proliferation, the lesser the chances that the cancer will spread outside the prostate, where it is much harder to treat."

The study appeared Oct. 25, 2011 in Cancer Prevention Research, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

The study, which evaluated blood samples before and after the diet commenced and examined tissue from the removed prostate, validated previous studies by Aronson and others done on cell lines and in animal models. Aronson said the study using human blood and tissue also proved that the changes prompted by what the men were eating were clearly evident in their prostate tissue - the "treatment" was indeed reaching the targeted organ because of the changes in the prostate cell membrane's fatty acid composition.

"You truly are what you eat," said Aronson, a clinical professor of urology, who also serves as chief of urologic oncology at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center. "Based on our animal studies, we were hopeful that we would see the same effects in humans. We are extremely pleased about our findings, which suggest that by altering the diet, we may favorable affect the biology of prostate cancer."

Aronson measured proliferation, or the rate of prostate cancer cell division, by staining tissue obtained from the radical prostatectomy specimens with an antibody against Ki-67, a protein involved in the cell-cycle progression and growth.

"The percentage of prostate cancer cells that stained for Ki-67 was determined by the pathologist, and this gave us an objective measurement of the percentage of cells that were actively dividing and therefore more aggressive," said Aronson. "Previous studies found that patients with higher levels of Ki-67 in their prostate cancer tissue were more likely to have their prostate cancer progress to advanced stages, and were more likely to die from their prostate cancer. Thus, we are extremely encouraged by our findings that a low-fat diet with fish oil lowered Ki-67 levels and may have the potential to slow the progression of prostate cancer."

Diet studies often are difficult to evaluate because getting patients to comply with dietary changes can be challenging. However, the food eaten by men in both arms of this study was precisely controlled, Aronson said. The meals were prepared by chefs in the UCLA Clinical Translational Research Center and delivered in bulk to study participants several times a week. Participants also met with a dietician, kept food diaries and were required to return uneaten food.

"The key to this study was having the meals prepared and delivered to the study participants," Aronson said. "This resulted in a very high rate of compliance, making the study very well controlled."

The Western diet consisted of 40 percent of calories from fat, generally equivalent to what many Americans consume today. The fat sources also were typical of the American diet, and included high levels of omega-6 fatty acids from corn oil and low levels of fish oil that provide omega-3 fatty acids.

The low-fat diet consisted of 15 percent of calories from fat. Additionally, the men on this diet took five grams of fish oil per day in five capsules, three with breakfast and two with dinner, to provide fish oil omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to reduce the incidence of heart disease and fight inflammation, and inflammation has been associated with certain cancers.

"Preclinical studies suggest that lowering dietary omega-6 fatty acids from corn oil and increasing omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil decreases the risk of prostate cancer development and progression," the study states. "We found this diet intervention resulted in a decrease in omega-6 vs. omega-3 fatty acid ratios in benign and malignant prostate tissue and a decrease in malignant cell proliferation."

Aronson cautioned that he could not recommend dietary changes based on this study because of its short duration and small sample size. However, based on these results he is organizing a much larger study of 100 men with prostate cancers who have elected active surveillance, meaning they're not getting any treatment for their disease but are getting regular biopsies and check-ups.

The future study will randomly divide the men into a low-fat, fish oil supplement group and a traditional Western diet group and follow them for a year to evaluate the diet effects on prostate cancer proliferation.

Fed bashing is back in vogue

The Federal Reserve is getting a lot of healthy criticism. But the moves by politicians are worrying.

Some believe the Federal Reserve has done too much ? that two rounds of quantitative easing, the new "Operation Twist," and myriad interventions during the depths of the financial crisis have set the stage for runaway inflation. As evidence, they point to the enormous expansion of bank reserves and the skyrocketing price of gold (at least, until recently).

Others believe Chairman Ben Bernanke and his colleagues have done too little and that monetary policy remains too tight. They point to the 15 million Americans who are looking for work and the millions more who have dropped out of the labor force. Even more troub?ling, almost half of the unemployed have been without work for six months or more, something Mr. Bernanke rightly labeled a "national crisis."

The Fed's mandate is to strike a balance between these concerns ? to pursue full employment and stable prices. That's a difficult task, especially when the US is struggling to recover from the worst financial shock since the Great Depression.

So the Fed has been receiving a great deal of advice, mostly unsolicited, about what to do. Much of that advice is healthy and constructive. Financial market participants, monetary policy experts, and even economic columnists all bring important insights to the debate. For what it's worth, I think the Fed should continue its efforts to stimulate our moribund economy; unemployment is clearly a bigger threat than inflation.

But I worry when politicians get involved. Lawmakers need to ensure that Fed actions promote the public welfare. It was, after all, created by Congress. That doesn't mean that politicians should meddle in its policymaking.

History shows independent central banks do a much better job of controlling inflation than those that give in to political pressures. When the Fed caved into LBJ's desire for loose money in the 1960s, it set the stage for a decade of high inflation.

Low inflation is not the only benefit of independence. Once they've built a reputation for keeping inflation in check, central banks have greater ability to step in to support a troubled economy.

Unfortunately, a growing number of politicians are leaning on the Fed. Most egregiously, presidential aspirant and Texas Gov. Rick Perry said in August that it would be "almost treasonous" for it to pursue more monetary stimulus. The day before the Fed announced its September policy decisions, House Speaker John Boehner and three other GOP congressional leaders sent a letter discouraging it from "further extraordinary intervention in the U.S. economy...."

On the other side of the aisle, US Rep. Barney Frank (D) of Massachusetts, the ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee, is developing a proposal to strip the regional Federal Reserve Bank presidents of their role in monetary policy. (The policymaking committee has 12 seats, seven filled by Senate-confirmed, presidential appointees ? two of which are currently vacant ? and five that rotate among the regional banks.) Mr. Frank floated his proposal after three regional presidents voted against further policy easing, so it's widely viewed as an effort to sway those presidents into being more accommodating.

For all its flaws, the Federal Reserve does a better job of evaluating economic conditions and balancing short- and long-term economic goals than our elected leaders ever could. Politicians on both sides of the aisle should temper their impulse to influence what the Fed is doing. In hard times, its independence is more important than ever.

Kittitas County Sheriff Gene Dana said in a statement Friday night that the death remains unexplained and that authorities are investigating.

White was discovered by housekeeping staff after he failed to check out of his hotel room at the Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Wash. An autopsy is being arranged.

KOMO-TV reported that a "sudden heart attack" was suspected.

'Extraordinarily talented leader'
The Democrat represented the state's 46th District, covering northern parts of Seattle. White joined the Senate last year and rose to serve as the Senate's majority whip, advocating for transit issues as a caucus transportation leader. He worked most recently as a project manager at the University of Washington.

"He was an extraordinarily talented leader and an accomplished legislator," Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown said in a statement. "The nobility and honor with which he approached his role as an elected official was rare, and his commitment was unprecedented."

White is survived by his wife and two children.

A native of Olympia, White played football at Timberline High School before going to both Western Washington University and the University of Washington. He worked on the King County Council, rising to serve as chief of staff before getting elected to the state House in 2008 before moving to the Senate two years later.

Gov. Chris Gregoire said White was never afraid to tackle difficult problems.

"I found him to be an absolute pleasure to work with, and a legislator who served his district and the entire state well," Gregoire said. "He had a bright and promising future ahead of him."

ZANESVILLE, Ohio (AP) ? The owner of an exotic animal preserve who committed suicide after freeing dozens of lions, tigers and other beasts owed tens of thousands in unpaid taxes, and a fellow big-cat enthusiast said that he had taken in so many creatures he was "in over his head."

A day after sheriff's deputies with high-powered rifles killed nearly 50 animals set free by Terry Thompson, the sheriff refused to speculate why he did it. Meanwhile, neighbors and friends questioned why Thompson ? a man who seemed to like animals more than people ? would send his animals to their doom.

Thompson was mired in debt. Court records show that he and his wife owed at least $68,000 in unpaid taxes to the IRS and the county, and he had two federal tax liens filed against him last year. He had just gotten out of federal prison last month for possessing unregistered weapons.

Kenny Hetrick, who has six tigers and other animals on his property outside Toledo, said Thursday he used to see Thompson at exotic-animal auctions a few times a year in Ohio. Many of Thompson's tigers had been donated to him by people who bought baby animals that they no longer wanted once they started to grow, Hetrick said.

"He really had more there than what he could do," Hetrick said. "I don't know what his deal was, but he was in over his head."

On Tuesday, Thompson, 62, opened the cages at his animal preserve and then killed himself. His body was found near the empty cages with a bite on the head that appeared to have been inflicted by a big cat shortly after Thompson shot himself, Sheriff Matt Lutz said. It appeared his body had been dragged a short distance, Lutz said.

Deputies killed 48 animals ? including 18 rare Bengal tigers, 17 lions and eight bears ? in a hunt across the Ohio countryside that lasted nearly 24 hours and that has been criticized by some who say the animals should have been saved. Only a monkey was still missing, and it was probably killed by one of the big cats, Lutz said.

Thompson had run-ins with his neighbors and the law over escaped animals and conditions at his preserve. But whether he acted out of desperation or vengeance in setting the animals loose was unclear.

"I know how much he cared for them, and he would know that they would be killed," said Judy Hatfield, a family friend who visited the farm many times and said it wasn't unusual to have a monkey jump on her lap.

"I don't know what happened. I'm sure some horrible thing happened to him yesterday to make him do this or allow him to lose focus for a moment and do it. But I don't know what it is, and we may never know."

Lutz said Thompson's intentions were not part of the investigation.

"To take your own life, Mr. Thompson was not in the right state of mind," Lutz said. "And to speculate on why he did this would be a belittlement, I guess, by me, to do that, and I'm not going to do that."

Thompson and his wife spent much of their time and money caring for their menagerie, neighbors said. Most of the big cats and bears were declawed and had been bottle-fed by the couple, Hatfield said. Thompson also kept them fed by picking up roadkill and collecting spoiled meat from grocery stores, said another neighbor, Fred Polk.

The sheriff said that he spoke with Thompson's wife and that she was distraught over the loss of her husband and the animals. "You have to understand these animals were like kids to her," Lutz said. "She probably spent more time with these animals than some parents do spend with their kids."

Thompson's Muskingum County Animal Farm was not open to visitors, but he would occasionally take some of the smaller animals to nearby pet shows or nursing homes. He also provided a big cat for a photo shoot with supermodel Heidi Klum and appeared on the "Rachael Ray Show" in 2008 as an animal handler for a zoologist guest.

As for how he may have covered the costs of taking care of his animals, friends said he had a pilot's license and sometimes picked up extra cash flying people on his private plane. Neighbors also said he and wife gave horse-riding lessons on their farm. The Vietnam veteran once owned a motorcycle shop, friends said.

"When he came back from Vietnam, he was a little bit different. He was kind of a loner after he came back," said Polk, whose property is about 100 yards from Thompson's house. "He liked animals more than he did people. He really did."

Since 2004, Thompson had been charged by local authorities with cruelty to animals, allowing his animals to run free and improperly disposing of dead animals.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture also received two complaints about the farm in 2008 and 2009, involving such things as pens that may have been unsafe, animals that were too skinny and dead animals on the property, said Dave Sacks, a USDA spokesman. But the agency decided it had no authority to act.

Federal officials said the government had no jurisdiction over the farm under either the Animal Welfare Act or the Endangered Species Act since the animals were held as private property and were not exhibited or being used for other commercial purposes.

Sony: to launch PS Vita February 22 in Europe, U.S. (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Sony Corp said on Wednesday it would launch its new handheld games device, the PlayStation Vita, on February 22 in the United States and Europe.

The new device, which hits stores in Japan on Dec 17, will be priced at $249.99 for the Wi-Fi version and $299.99 for the 3G/Wifi version in the U.S. market, way above rival Nintendo's 3DS, which now sells for $169.99 in the U.S.

But analysts note Sony's handheld games devices sell mostly to core gamers, who are more likely to accept higher prices. Domestic media reports said the start of advance orders for the PS Vita in Japan on October 15 had attracted large crowds.

Occupy protesters eye diversity as movement grows (AP)

ATLANTA ? Jason Woody immediately recognized a shared struggle with many of the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators: The 2007 college graduate has been out of work for two years, and it's been longer since he's seen a doctor. He also noticed something else ? the lack of brown faces on the front lines of the Occupy movement.

"When I started out here ... I realized there was not a lot of diversity out here," said Woody, who is black and graduated from Morehouse College and has camped in a downtown Atlanta park with other protesters for more than a week. "It's changed in the course of the past week. I'd like to see that grow."

The outcry against the nation's financial institutions that has swept the country in recent weeks has crossed many boundaries, including class, gender and age. But a stubborn hurdle in many cities has been a lack of racial inclusion, something noted by organizers and participants alike.

"We, the 99 percent, have to be reaching out to the cross section of the communities that we live in," said Tim Franzen, one of the organizers of the Occupy Atlanta movement. "If you come down to the park and spend a day I think you might have a hard time saying this is an all-white movement. We are reaching out, but we've got some bridges to build."

The absence of diversity is particularly notable given that some of the larger issues surrounding the Occupy movement ? including the economy, foreclosures and unemployment ? are disproportionately affecting people of color. And the legacy of activism present in some minority communities seems a natural segue for such a cause, which has been linked to the strategies of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

African-Americans are more inclined to rally around social justice than financial literacy causes, said John Hope Bryant, founder and chief executive officer of Operation HOPE, a non-profit organization that educates underserved and low-income Americans about personal financial responsibility.

"If this was about someone unjustly being brutalized, that's an easier thing for us to mobilize around," said Bryant, who is black, citing the recent Troy Davis death penalty case in Georgia, a diverse protest that attracted global attention last month.

The Occupy Wall Street protest in New York has been more diverse than other cities. Although the majority of protesters are white, many blacks and a smattering of Asians and Latinos have participated.

Among them is Omar Henriquez, a Long Island resident who emigrated from El Salvador. He passed out Spanish-language copies of the Occupied Wall Street Journal on Friday. He has been taking the newspaper to Latino and immigrant rights groups. He also is unemployed.

"That's why I'm here," said Henriquez, 55. "It's incumbent on us, Latinos here, to bring more Latinos here. We don't have to be invited to come, we just come."

On Saturday, the nation's capital provided a sharp contrast: A few dozen white protesters were camped out in Washington's Freedom Plaza. They were separate from Occupy DC but hold similar ideals. Not far away, thousands marched to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. Their rallying cry was similar, if not identical ? yet the vast majority were black.

A few men played the bongo drums at Freedom Plaza, while a band at the nearby rally led by the Rev. Al Sharpton near the Washington Monument played a soulful, jazzy rendition of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature" ? albeit with a white saxophonist ? and the crowd sang along knowingly as a speaker recited the catchy intro to the "Tom Joyner Show."

Phil Calhoun, 44, an engineer from Crofton, Md., who was checking out the various protests, marveled at the racial disparity between the two groups even though they were preaching similar ideologies.

"Maybe it's just the nature of our society, set this up this way," he said. "But it's one thing I think we need to bridge. We need to bridge that gap."

In Baltimore, there are people representing different racial, ethnic, age and income groups, but not in proportion to the city's population. Occupy Baltimore group organizer C.T. Lawrence Butler, who is white said there has been talk of going out to communities around the city to try to attract more people, but the group is just building steam and hasn't had a chance to put together official outreach. Instead, individuals have been reaching out to communities on their own, a strategy that may work better.

"Everybody would like more diversity," Butler said. "The group is focusing on creating a place where everybody can feel safe speaking up."

Most of the people at Occupy Boston on Friday appeared to be young and white, with just a handful of blacks, Latinos and Asians in an area not far from the city's Chinatown neighborhood. Anthony Messina, a 19-year-old biotech student at Middlesex Community College who is white, said he sees the beginnings of racial diversity at the protests, but that the numbers are nowhere near where they should be.

"It's not a representative group, and I don't think anyone would lie and tell you that it is," Messina said, adding that whites have to be careful when reaching out to minorities to join the movement. "You don't want to come off like you're preaching that you know what's good for them."

Bryant, of Operation HOPE, added that while the economic crisis has hit the middle class hard, blacks have reacted differently than whites, equating money with self-image and feeling ashamed and responsible for their financial situation, rather than angry.

"Money for us is a badge," Bryant said. "Money for them is a vehicle. We don't want to be seen. We just want to hide, and hope the storyline changes."

Blacks also don't want to be seen as just complaining. Former activists like Ambassador Andrew Young have pointed out that the Occupy movement is still in a nascent stage, with protesters more focused on what they're against rather than what they're for.

Robert Zachary, a black, 61-year-old chaplain who has participated in the Occupy Asheville protests in North Carolina, noted the lack of diversity there.

"What we really need to do is build inroads and to speak to their needs, to show that their needs and everybody else's needs are basically all the same," he said of outreach to the black community.

In Atlanta, Woody said the word didn't get out clearly enough to African-Americans when the movement began. Now, he's trying to get more historically black colleges involved, such as his alma mater.

"I felt that my voice should be represented," Woody said. "A lot of people feel like it won't make a difference. I wish more people would realize that the more support we can show, the more powerful it makes our movement."

Should your hairdresser screen you for skin cancer? (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? Next time you get a haircut, you might end up with something you didn't expect: a referral to a dermatologist.

A survey of Texas hair salons out today found more than a third of stylists check at least half of their customers for suspicious moles on the scalp, and most have referred people to a doctor lest the mole turn out to be skin cancer.

What's more, half the hairdressers were keen to learn more about skin cancer to help extend the reach of doctors screening for the disease, according to findings in the Archives of Dermatology.

"What we would like to do in the next couple of years is to train as many hair professionals as possible," said Alan Geller, of Harvard's School of Public Health in Boston, who led the new work. "We think this holds a lot of promise."

He's not the only one hoping to spread the gospel of modern medicine through hair salons and barbershops, whose clientele might not otherwise see a health provider.

In 2008, for instance, a foundation sponsored by the Abbott Fund began offering free diabetes and high-blood pressure screening at black-owned barbershops in New York City.

A study from last year showed such an approach may help rein in uncontrolled blood pressure, and cancer researchers have also found barbershops to be promising venues for disease-awareness campaigns.

But other experts aren't convinced that "only your hairdresser knows for sure."

"As a rule, you should do what you're good at," said Dr. Martin Glud, a dermatologist at Bispebjerg Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark. "If you're a hairdresser, that's cutting hair, with all due respect."

Earlier this year, Glud published a study showing that while the rates of melanoma -- the deadliest form of skin cancer -- have shot up recently, the disease's death toll has barely increased.

That indicates that at least in some cases, the additional tumors being diagnosed wouldn't have gone on to kill the person.

"Some believe the rise in melanomas is really a sign of overdiagnosis," Glud told Reuters Health.

About one in 50 white Americans born today will get melanoma at some point during their life, according to the American Cancer Society. The group estimates that roughly 8,800 will die from the disease in 2011.

Because melanomas are so rare -- particularly on the neck and scalp -- and moles are very common, Glud worries that hairdressers might sound a lot of false alarms, contributing to the problem of overdiagnosis.

"It's a slippery slope," he said.

Geller acknowledged that having hair salons double as screening centers could end up taxing scarce health care resources.

"We would need to make sure that this doesn't lead to a tremendous drain for the health care system," he cautioned.

Suspicious moles are those that itch, bleed, change color or grow asymmetrically. A dermatologist may choose to biopsy such a mole and remove it if cancer is found. That can leave a scar, and may require a skin graft in the case of larger tumors.

Geller, who polled 203 hair professionals from a chain of 17 salons in the Houston area, said there is "circumstantial evidence" that screening for skin cancer saves lives. But he acknowledged there are no direct experiments to prove that point.

As a result, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a federally appointed expert panel, says there is too little data to balance the harms and benefits of skin cancer screening at the doctor's office, let alone hair salons.

"I certainly can't support the implication of this study that we should be training hairdressers to do skin screenings," said Dr. Michael LeFevre from the task force.

But he added that doesn't mean they shouldn't point to moles their customers might not have noticed themselves.

"To raise the individual's awareness that there is something there is not inappropriate," he told Reuters Health. "That is different from referring them to the doctor."

New Yorkers support anti-Wall Street protests: poll (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Anti-Wall Street protests have won broad support among New York City voters, who would overwhelmingly favor tougher regulations on the financial industry, new poll results showed on Monday.

Sixty-seven percent of those who responded to a Quinnipiac University survey said they agreed with the Occupy Wall Street protesters, who are upset that banks were allowed to earn huge profits after being bailed out during the recession, while average Americans remained under financial strain.

An even wider margin, 87 percent, agreed with the protesters' right to camp out in Lower Manhattan, as long as they obeyed the law. The movement began staging rallies more than a month ago.

Support for the protests was split down party lines, with 81 percent of the Democrats saying they backed them, while only 35 percent of Republicans said so.

The protests have spread across the country and moved overseas over the weekend. While most rallies were relatively small, violence flared in Rome where tens of thousands of people came into the streets.

The movement's focal point, however, has been New York, where protests have been largely peaceful. Still, less than half of those surveyed approved of the way police have handled the demonstrations, after several episodes in which force has been used on protesters.

The largest block of voters, 37 percent, blamed former President George W. Bush's administration for the nation's economic problems, while 21 percent blamed banks. Seventy-three percent said they would support tougher government regulation.

The Oct 12-16 poll of 1,068 registered voters had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

HTC Thunderbolt Gingerbread update anticipated to be coming (back) 'soon'

HTC on Twitter

The HTC Thunderbolt has had a rough patch when it comes to Gingerbread.  Combine lots of rumors, even more leaks, and a pretty poor OTA that ended up getting yanked back and you'll have a mix that's bound to have Android power users up in arms.  We're not going to judge anyone here, heck we can't judge  -- releasing software isn't easy.  Verizon and HTC want you to be happy, because they want you to be a return customer.  To quote a great philosopher, "Shit Happens".

Hopefully, the happenings have finished, and according to the official @HTC Twitter account, the powers that be "anticipate the update being available soon."  By most accounts, the previous build of Gingerbread was about 90 percent, and the few bugs remaining have hopefully been squashed.  We've got Phil's battle-scarred Thunderbolt primed and ready, and as soon as we catch wind of any updates you'll be the first to know.

Thanks, Ryan!
