Student engineers design, build, fly 'printed' airplane

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? When University of Virginia engineering students posted a YouTube video last spring of a plastic turbofan engine they had designed and built using 3-D printing technology, they didn't expect it to lead to anything except some page views.

But executives at Mitre Corporation, a McLean-based defense contractor, saw the video and sent an announcement to the School of Engineering and Applied Science that they were looking for two summer interns to work on a new project involving 3-D printing. They just didn't say what the project was.

Only one student responded to the job announcement: Steven Easter, then a third-year mechanical engineering major.

"I was curious about what they had to offer, but I didn't call them until the day of the application deadline," Easter said.

He got a last-minute interview and brought with him his brother and lab partner, Jonathan Turman, also a third-year mechanical engineering major.

They got the job: to build over the summer an unmanned aerial vehicle, using 3-D printing technology. In other words, a plastic plane, to be designed, fabricated, built and test-flown between May and August. A real-world engineering challenge, and part of a Department of the Army project to study the feasibility of using such planes.

Three-dimensional printing is, as the name implies, the production or "printing" of actual objects, such as parts for a small airplane, by using a machine that traces out layers of melted plastic in specific shapes until it builds up a piece exactly according to the size and dimensions specified in a computer-aided drawing produced by an engineer.

In this case, the engineers were Easter and Turman, working with insight from their adviser, mechanical and aerospace engineering professor David Sheffler, a U.Va. Engineering School alumnus and 20-year veteran of the aerospace industry.

It was a daunting project -- producing a plane with a 6.5-foot wingspan, made from assembled "printed" parts. The students sometimes put in 80-hour workweeks, with many long nights in the lab.

"It was sort of a seat-of-the-pants thing at first -- wham, bang," Easter said. "But we kept banging away and became more confident as we kept designing and printing out new parts."

Sheffler said he had confidence in them "the entire way."

The way eventually led to assembly of the plane and four test flights in August and early September at Milton Airfield near Keswick. It achieved a cruising speed of 45 mph and is only the third 3-D printed plane known to have been built and flown.

During the first test, the plane's nosepiece was damaged while the plane taxied around the field.

"We dogged it," Easter said. "But we printed a new nose."

That ability to make and modify new parts is the beauty of 3-D printing, said Sheffler, who works with students in the Engineering School's Rapid Prototyping Lab. The lab includes seven 3-D printers used as real-world teaching tools.

"Rapid prototyping means rapid in small quantities," Sheffler said. "It's fluid, in that it allows students to evolve their parts and make changes as they go -- design a piece, print it, make needed modifications to the design, and print a new piece. They can do this until they have exactly what they want."

The technology also allows students to take on complex design projects that previously were impractical.

"To make a plastic turbofan engine to scale five years ago would have taken two years, at a cost of about $250,000," Sheffler said. "But with 3-D printing we designed and built it in four months for about $2,000. This opens up an arena of teaching that was not available before. It allows us to train engineers for the real challenges they will face in industry."

Mitre Corp. representatives and Army officials observed the fourth flight of Easter and Turman's plane. They were impressed and asked the students to stay on through this academic year as part-time interns. Their task now is to build an improved plane -- lighter, stronger, faster and more easily assembled. The project also is their fourth-year thesis. "This has been a great opportunity for us," Easter said, "to showcase engineering at U.Va. and the capabilities of the Rapid Prototyping Lab."

GoPro's new Hero3 is lighter, faster, higher res and has WiFi, comes in three flavors starting at $199

GoPro's new Hero3 Black Edition is lighter, faster, higher res and has builtn WiFi

At a San Francisco launch event GoPro has just revealed the next addition to its line of action cameras, the Hero3. The Hero3 claims specs that are 30 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than its predecessor, with a resolution that's up to 4x higher and it has WiFi included. The top of the line Black Edition (pictured above) is capable of capturing video at up to 4K res -- if you're willing to drop the framerate down to 15fps -- however thanks to a processor it says is 2x faster, it has also doubled frame rates at lower resolutions. That means 1080p60, 1440p48 and 720p120 modes are supported for your super slow and still-HD capture needs. The Silver Edition maxes out at 11MP stills and 1080p30 video, while the White Edition drops down to 5MP stills. All three versions include WiFi (no BacPac necessary for remote control via the just-released-on-iOS app) however the Black edition includes a remote that can control up to 50 cameras at once with a 600ft range and is waterproof to 10 feet deep. It will also be available as a $79 accessory for the lesser versions.

As far as pricing, the Black Edition is $399, the Silver is $299 and the White $199. Pre-orders are scheduled to start at 12:01AM PT (3:01AM ET), and there's a handy counter on the GoPro site if you otherwise might forget. The variety of models and ubiquitous WiFi may help fight off competition at the pricing low end like the new ContourROAM2, among others. Naturally we were in the house and will have hands-on pics and impressions soon, check the gallery for pics of the box and detailed specs.

Austerity may have hurt growth more than predicted

LONDON (Reuters) - The British government's spending cuts and tax increases may have hurt economic growth more than originally assumed, the country's forecasting body OBR said on Tuesday.

The independent Office for Budget Responsibility's assessment is likely to fuel the heated debate about the government's austerity drive, which the opposition in parliament blames for the renewed recession in Britain.

The OBR -- set up by the government to produce forecasts and assess fiscal policy -- also said in its annual evaluation of its forecasting record that the financial crisis may have caused a lasting hit to the economy's ability to grow.

"Along with many other forecasters, we significantly overestimated economic growth over the past two years," it said.

The hit from stubborn inflation on consumer spending, worsening export markets, and impaired credit conditions as well as the euro area anxiety and the impact of uncertainty on business investment all contributed to the weak growth, it said.

"Fiscal consolidation may also have done more to slow growth than we assumed," the OBR economists said.

However, the OBR noted that the so called fiscal multiplier - which defines the impact of fiscal policy on growth - would have had to be twice as large as originally assumed to explain the full shortfall in growth.

The OBR had predicted in June 2010 - just after the current coalition government of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats came to power - that the economy would grow 5.7 percent between the first quarter of 2010 and the second quarter of 2012.

However, it has grown only 0.9 percent.

Nevertheless, public borrowing declined from 11.2 percent of gross domestic product in the fiscal year 2009-2010 to 7.8 percent in 2011-2012, largely as the OBR had forecast.

"Nominal consumer spending and the labour market performed more strongly than the real economy, helping to sustain receipts from labour taxes and VAT while restraining social security bills," the OBR said.

The government also spent less than budgeted for and less than expected on public services and administration, it added.

The International Monetary Fund cut its economic forecasts for Britain on Monday, and said more Bank of England stimulus -- and possibly higher public spending or tax cuts -- may be needed if the outlook darkens.

In March, the OBR forecast growth of 0.8 percent for the British economy. However, the IMF like most economists now think that the economy will shrink in 2012 after a three quarters of recession since late 2011.

The OBR said that an unexpected slump in trade and investment were the main reasons for the renewed recession. "Changes in government spending directly added to GDP rather than subtracting from it as we predicted," it said.

The lack of growth has piled pressure on the government to ease austerity, aimed at erasing a huge budget deficit.

Finance minister George Osborne has reiterated his commitment to stick to its plan of tax hikes and spending cuts, but many economists expect him to miss one of his goals -- a fall in debt to GDP ratio by 2015 -- anyway.

The OBR will publish new forecasts on December 5 for Osborne's autumn statement, when he may face the tough choice of either announcing more spending cuts or delay his debt target.

When you are thinking about taking out a home improvement loan ...

by: FaraldoPedraja237 - October 15th, 2012

Prepare for loss of water use. If you are planning any project involving plumbing and/or shutting off the supply of water to the house, make sure you account for your family?s needs. You should at the very least have several buckets of water available for manually flushing the toilet; or you could consider renting a portable lavatory for longer projects.

If you have decided to start working on improving your home, but you want to do this alone, you should be sure to start with an easy project. Many people jump straight into something like adding on another room, and then they quickly find themselves overwhelmed and confused about what they are doing.

If you are improving a home that you plan to live in for the rest of your life, then always get the best materials you can afford. While 10 years may sound like a long time, ask yourself if you really want to be doing this project again down the road, and opt for materials with a lifetime warranty instead.

When you are thinking about taking out a home improvement loan make sure you do your research. It has become increasingly harder to take out a home improvement loan that is unsecured which means you may have to use your home as collateral. Make sure this is something that you are prepared to do.

Paint should always be considered when starting home improvement to increase the value of your home. Not only does a fresh coat of paint make your home look nicer and fresh, it is also an extremely cheap way to add a great deal of value to your home. It also takes less time than other methods.

Improving the air quality inside your home can be an invaluable home improvement for both your health and the resale value of your house. The first step would be to replace any old carpets or have them professionally cleaned, as they could be hiding contaminants, allergens and unpleasant odors. Secondly, if your budget allows, install an energy efficient air conditioning system.

As stated before in the article above, home improvement is the process of making changes, such as repair and renovation, to homes. Using the tips in this article, you should be able to tackle any home improvement project no matter the size of the task.

Gunmen kill 20 at mosque in northern Nigeria

Gunmen opened fire on Muslim worshippers as they were leaving a mosque in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing at least 20 people, a local official said.

The attack happened in a remote village called Dogo Dawa, in Kaduna state, said Abdullahi Muhammad, the traditional ruler and councilor of Birnin Gwari, a local government area next door to the village.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Like much of northern Nigeria, Kaduna is plagued by an insurgency led by radical Islamist sect Boko Haram. They usually attack security forces, government officials or Christians, but have hit Muslim clerics and mosques in the past, especially ones that do not follow their hardline brand of Islam.

Kaduna also lies close to Nigeria's volatile "Middle Belt", where Nigeria's mostly Muslim north and largely Christian south meet, and where tensions over land and ethnicity often erupt into violence.

But Abdulladhi said the attack was most likely carried out by a local criminal gang.

More international stories from NBC News

"We are suspecting a reprisal attack by gangs of armed robbers who lost some of their members after a recent exchange of fire with the villagers and the vigilantes," he said.

"The village had been terrorized by an armed group operating from camps in the forest. These armed men mostly attack villages and motorists along the busy Kaduna to Lagos highway."

The state police commissioner Olufemi Adenaike confirmed the incident, but said he could not yet confirm the death toll.

More Nigeria coverage from NBC News

The Islamist insurgency in northern Nigeria and weapons flooding in from its neighbours on the threshold of the Sahara have aggravated levels of violence in the region. Armed robberies and local disputes degenerating into deadly shootouts are increasingly common across the impoverished north.

Tying our fate to molecular markings

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? A Simon Fraser University physicist has helped discover that understanding how a chemical mark on our DNA affects gene expression could be as useful to scientists as fingerprints are to police at a crime scene.

In a new study, Emberly and his colleagues cite proof that variable methylation, a chemical mark on our DNA, is predictive of age, gender, stress, cancer and early-life socioeconomic status within a population. The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) has just published the study online.

Working with researchers at the University of British Columbia and Stanford University, Eldon Emberly studied the variation of methylation over a large group of individuals.

DNA that is methylated in our genomes is known to affect whether genes are turned on or off. Gene expression predicates several attributes linked to our identity, such as gender, ethnicity, age and health.

The trio measured methylation from DNA in the white blood cells of 92 people aged 24 to 45. Emberly's lab helped to mine the resulting data sets for correlations between variation in the chemical mark and variable social, psychological and physical traits in the subjects.

The results demonstrated that those who had experienced childhood poverty had a different methylation level from those who hadn't. This was despite the fact everyone in the cohort had achieved the same socioeconomic status later in life.

That meant that early-life environment had left a detectable molecular mark on an individual's DNA.

The correlation between methylation and gene expression was complex because it wasn't always predictable but there was one connection of particular note says Emberly, an SFU associate professor.

"Variable methylation correlated with variable expression of the gene DDX4, which is linked to certain cancers."

Emberly says this study's discoveries raise interesting questions, as the connection between methylation and some traits, such as smoking and alcohol consumption, was weaker than expected or non existent.

"We're now investigating whether methylation variation in different types of tissue is more predictive of some trait," adds Emberly.

Pau Farre, a master's of science student in physics under Emberly's supervision, is doing a statistical analysis of the variability in methylation across tissues.

Apple, other thin laptop makers pass latest round of EPEAT tests after summer mini-drama

MacBook Air 13-inch front view with grass wallpaper

Apple gave eco-friendly computer fans a brief jolt this July after it backed out of EPEAT certification, only to restore most devices just days later. While we can't say we're completely shocked at the follow-up, EPEAT has confirmed that at least one "ultra-thin" laptop from Apple has just cleared the verification process. The as yet unnamed system is more likely to be a Mac that had already earned the recycling-friendly rating in the past, such as the MacBook Air, rather than a sudden turnaround for the MacBook Pro with Retina Display. The look wasn't exclusively devoted to the Mac side, though -- EPEAT cleared Apple's computer as part of a wider test that also greenlit extra-thin portables from Lenovo, Samsung and Toshiba. We've reached out to get a more definitive list, but the approvals should ease the minds of those worried that ever-slimmer laptops are forcing us to give up our green efforts.

Japan's Softbank in 'advanced talks' to acquire Sprint for $12+ billion

While recent rumors suggested Sprint could be interested in snatching up Metro PCS, it may actually be the target of an acquisition. The Nikkei, Reuters and Wall Street Journal report it is in final buyout talks with Japanese carrier Softbank at a price in excess of 1 trillion yen ($12 billion US). Just over a week ago Softbank snapped up rival eAccess in a billion dollar deal that added 50 percent more base stations to its LTE network and will move it from third to second largest in the country when it is completed. It got to third place with a leveraged buyout of Vodafone's Japanese arm back in 2006, and CEO Masayoshi Son mentioned last week that he has his eye on the number one spot. We're not exactly sure how a potential purchase of the third place American carrier fits into its plans (or what this means for Sprint's future, its LTE rollout and its often woeful 3G speeds), but we're betting Softbank's CFO is just trying to keep Son away from any juicy looking eBay "Buy It Now" auctions.

So, an update from my last post?. I did not SI. I cried, wrote some poetry late into the night, fell asleep, and woke up to a beautiful day. He just doesn?t seem so important anymore. Those words mean nothing because they come from the mouth of a narcissist who can?t even empathize with others. But a new day brings new problems. My mom?s boyfriend got laid off. This is bad news for me because my mom get stressed with money issues, and the more she stresses, the more our relationship suffers.
I know I?m strong enough to survive and fight this without relying on someone else, but it would be so nice to have someone hold my hand through this. I feel like all my relationships are built around conditions, and I wish there weren?t conditions. I wish simply being myself was enough. Maybe if it was, I wouldn?t feel like there was something inherently wrong with me, another driving force behind the SI. But nobody is perfect, and disappointing people is part of life. I have to remind myself everyday, that sometimes, people?s reactions are not about you. Sometimes you can be as kind and caring as possible and it just isn?t enough for some people. But that?s not about you, it?s about them. So why punish yourself for something that you?re really not involved in?

Business Leaders Urge Peru to Boost Security After Shining Path ...

You are here: Home / Business / Business Leaders Urge Peru to Boost Security After Shining Path Attack

Business leaders are urging President Ollanta Humala?s government to boost security in south-central Peru to protect energy infrastructure, following an attack by Shining Path remnants on Saturday.

Ricardo Brice?o,?former president of the business association Confiep and of the National Mining, Oil and Energy Society (SNMPE), said in an interview with Radioprogramas that the state has an obligation to all Peruvians as well as to companies.

A group of Shining Path remnants set fire to three helicopters on Saturday at a small airport in the town of Kiteni, in Peru?s southern Cusco region. The helicopters provide transport services to the companies in charge of maintenance to the pipeline that moves gas from the Camisea gas fields in the Madre de Dios jungle to Peru?s coast.

The operator of the pipeline, Transportadora de Gas del Peru, TGP, said after the attack that?it was suspending maintenance on the infrastructure due to the security concerns. It also said the attack created risks for the supply of gas to the Peruvian coast, where it is used to generate electricity for?industries and a growing percentage of the population.

Earlier in the year, a pipeline maintenance crew, working for TGP and Argentina?s Tecpetrol, were kidnapped by Shining Path rebels and released within the week, following alleged negotiations. At the time, an unsuccessful attempt by military and police to rescue the hostages resulted in police casualties, and cause the resignation of the ministers of Defense and Interior.?

    TGP is a private consortium led by?Argentina?s Techint and includes US-based Hunt Oil, Algeria?s state-owned Sonatrach, Argentina?s Pluspetrol, South Korea?s SK, France?s GDF Suez-Tractebel, and Peru?s Gra?a y Montero.?

Brice?o said the attack demonstrates the lack of planning by the government to capture Shining Path rebels that continue to operate in the area.

It is ?extremelyworrying that the Peruvian government and the armed forces and police do not have a coherent plan to attack the problem straight on,? Brice?o said, according to daily El Comercio.

?There haven?t been any results from the counter-insurgency actions,? he added.

SNMPE also issued a statement urging the Peru?s government ?to adopt the necessary measures and actions to guarantee energy security in the country.?

It said that gas from the pipeline provides about 50 percent of Peru?s electricity production and more than 80 percent of liquid petroleum gas consumed in the country.? Since 2001 the government has been setting?great importance on the distribution of gas to the coast and to the southern highlands of Puno and Cusco as the major source for energy.

?We can?t allow history to repeat itself,? SNMPE said, referring to the 1980s and early 1990s when the Shining Path threatened to topple the Peruvian government through a combination?of bombings of key infrastructure, particularly the electrical power grids, attacks on police and military as well as community leaders, and targeted assassinations of opponents.

Red and the Peanut: The eagle's nest at Spring Valley Wildlife Area...

Sunday Matty and I drove up to the Spring Valley Wildlife Area, a beautiful wetland just past Waynesville, OH (about 35 minutes from our house). We wanted to hike out through the corn fields and windbreaks that border the wetland to check out what we hope is an eagle's nest. Before we set out on that hike, though, we took some time to study the marsh and look for birds on the lake. I went to the east and photographed some asters, and when I came back to the car, I found Matty writing in his journal...
Journal entry from August 8, 2012 (by Matty Riccetti)
    Spring Valley Wildlife Area
    ?
"It is an interesting day at Spring Valley marsh. The trees are beginning to blush red and orange in the cool air of the approaching winter, and the birds are finding nests (roosts/places) among the leaves to barricade themselves from the autumn frosts; however, the marsh looks the same. The lily pads still polka dot the surface, and frogs still hop in the water as I draw closer. The marsh refuses to alter its appearance for the coming season; the landscape thus is both picturesque and confusing. Although the marsh still clings to its summer ways, it is still indescribably beautiful the way it picks up the autumn hues from the trees. Seasons change, but the beauty and depth of the marsh does not."

Earlier this summer, we saw this nest from a distance. It was much bigger than any Red-tailed Hawk's nest we had ever seen, and it was located where a park attendant said an eagle couple had nested this spring, so I'm 90% sure it's an eagle's nest. I can't wait to check it out this coming February or March to confirm. The nest looked big from a distance, but up close, it was huge! It's actually located on the other side of the Little Miami river from the trail, so you're still not that close, which is good, because the eagles can remain undisturbed. It looked a lot like the eagle's nest I saw up close in Florida (click here and here for those photos.) After viewing the eagle's nest, Matty and I headed back up the trail to the old beaver's pond. We were looking for the Red-headed Woodpeckers that liver there. Red-headed Woodpeckers are rare in our neck of the woods, but there is a population at Spring Valley, and we were hoping one or two would be about. We saw male and female Downy Woodpeckers, a few Red-bellied Woodpeckers, and we heard a Pileated, but no Red-headed Woodpeckers. It was getting late and the temp was dropping quickly, so we took the cut-off back to the lake, and when we emerged from the woods we heard something....and to our left, a Red-headed Woodpecker flew up from the ground and over the trees. His tell-tale white back feathers were flashing in the low light. Pretty cool...

    Smoking Cigarettes

    Smoking Cigarettes

Hooked! ? There would be no better way to describe my years of dependence on cigarettes. I had to have a cigarette. That is the way it was for me once upon a time. Smoking cigarettes is one of greatest mistakes I ever made.

It was the cool thing to do. Nobody I knew knew it was a deadly habit. People smoked around babies, in restaurants, in movie theaters, and even on public transportation. You smoked wherever you wanted. It seemed everybody smoked.

There was no such thing as second-hand smoke. It was unheard of. In the 1960?s people spent many hours in smoke filled rooms, whether they were smokers or not. If you were a smoker you would walk a country mile if you ran out of cigarettes and had no other way to get to a store. You were hooked.

Cigarette smokers will spend their last penny or beg for extra change if they run out of cigarettes. They will do just about anything to support their habit. Quitting is no simple matter, either. It could very well be one of the hardest things you do in your life. But it can be done.

I tried to quit for years. I just couldn?t do it, at the time, and continued to puff my life away. One day fate stepped in when an old friend I hadn?t heard from in years called. ?Just wanted to see how you were doing,? he said. The last time I saw him he was a 2-pack a day smoker.

?Guess what, I quit smoking, he continued ... been 4 years.? He said he was amazed that he had actually succeeded and that he had used sunflower seeds to do it. I thought that over for about a week before I went out and bought a nice big bag of sunflower seeds in the shells.

My friend explained that you have to get the sunflower seeds in the shell, not the shelled kind. You need the shells for the cracking and splitting activity ? it is something to do with your hands and your mouth. Cigarette smoking is an oral fixation. It supplies continuous hand-mouth activity.

The sunflower seeds substitute the hand-mouth activity through the hard parts of withdrawal. They replace the cigarettes and offer you a substitute while you are detoxing. Hand to mouth, hand to mouth, something in your hand to put in your mouth. Just like cigarettes.

Instead of sucking up the smoke and blowing it out, you chew open shells and spit them out. Much healthier! I haven?t had a cigarette in over a decade. The sunflower seeds did the trick for me, too. Remember the cigarette smokes you?re just the sucker. Good luck!
