?Haroon Hamdard edged toward a suspected explosive device lying in a field in western Afghanistan. His job as a demining worker was to identify such devices and figure out how to render them harmless. But the young worker stumbled. His foot hit a rock that tumbled forward and detonated a small bomb. Mr. Hamdard was left in critical condition, and lost his right arm. He was fitted with a barely functioning prosthetic arm. The married father of one was unemployed for the next six years. Hamdard finally got a job at Spark, a workshop in Kabul funded by a US nonprofit where people who have been disabled by land mines make demining equipment. Sale of the equipment funds rehabilitation clinics, one of which will finally outfit Hamdard with a better prosthetic arm.

After three decades of war, Afghanistan is littered with land mines. Insurgents have been increasingly conflating foreign aid with foreign occupation and demining organizations feel the brunt of this. The majority of nongovernmental workers detained by armed groups in 2011 were deminers ? the Taliban tend not to appreciate those who try to remove their bombs. Many Afghans continue to be injured by land mines, but the level of care Hamdard received is rarely available outside Kabul.

MIAMI (AP) - When the Miami Marlins' new ballpark stirs to life Friday, concession-stand workers will prepare such Cuban fare as fresh ceviche, plantain chips with garlic sauce and roasted pork sandwiches.

Then they'll wait to see if South Florida's Cuban Americans still have an appetite for baseball.

The Marlins hired Ozzie Guillen as manager to raise their profile, and he has done just that. By praising former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, Guillen made national headlines, earned a five-game suspension and antagonized a large percentage of the franchise's fan base.

Now the Marlins return home for the first time since the furor began. When they open a six-game homestand Friday against Houston, the focus will be not on the Marlins' talented team or futuristic ballpark, but on the possible fan protests.

The Hunger Games Sequel: Gary Ross Out as Director

Gary Ross and The Hunger Games have parted ways.

Ross' exit was all but confirmed last week, but he's released a statement explaining why he decided to discontinue his work with the famous trilogy:

"Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct Catching Fire," said Ross (below, right).

"As a writer and a director, I simply don't have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would want to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule."

"I loved making The Hunger Games. It was the happiest experience of my professional life. Lionsgate was supportive in a manner that few directors ever experience."

"They empowered me to make the film I wanted to make and backed the movie in a way that requires no explanation beyond the remarkable results."

"And contrary to what has been reported, negotiations with Lionsgate have not been problematic. They have also been very understanding of this difficult decision."

"I also cannot say enough about the people I worked with: Producer Nina Jacobson, a great collaborator and a true friend; the brilliant Suzanne Collins, who entrusted us with her most amazing and important story; the remarkable Jennifer Lawrence whose performance exceeded my wildest expectations, and the rest of the incredible cast, whom I am proud to call my friends."

"To the fans I want to say thank you for your support your faith, your enthusiasm and your trust. Hard as this may be to understand I am trying to keep that trust with you. Thank you all. It's been a wonderful experience."

The studio also released a statement addressing the news, saying, "We're very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct Catching Fire."

"We were really looking forward to making the movie with him. He did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work. This will not be the end of our relationship, as we consider Ross to be part of the Lionsgate family."

Sad news, but inevitable from the sound of it. And now, the search for the new director begins. Any thoughts on who should direct Catching Fire?

A Minute With: Martin Scorsese on time running out

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Time slipping away seems to be on Martin Scorsese's mind.

After the critical success of his recent "Hugo," the luminary director says he would make every future film in 3D, but approaching age 70, he is more concerned with movies that perfect his take on American life than with technology.

Scorsese spoke to Reuters at a new advertising campaign for Hennessy Cognac, one of several brands he promotes, about how he forged a career spanning more than 45 years, which actor from whom he learned the most and how striving to be in the league of the greatest film directors keeps him making more movies.

Q: Lately you have a bit of reputation for being one of the most approachable people in Hollywood?

A: "Well, I am a New Yorker. I am a Manhattanite, I should say. But, I guess over the years, one has to realize that at times, I talked about being giant and egotistical, that's what I do at work and I have to think that way at times. I get psychologically and emotionally set that way and over the years, I am 69, I may have gone too far over the line. I found it wasn't really productive for anybody. So then you pull back."

Q: Why are you still driven to do what you do?

A: "I am not satisfied with the work. I just don't know."

Q: Some people might find that incredible coming from you?

A: "I know if I was inspired by 2280 films or whatever in the past, I will never be able to equal that feeling of a transcendence, sometimes, of seeing certain films, that I had, maybe 20 or 30 times watching these pictures, of the same film. So I may never be in that league with my own films, for myself. So maybe that is why I am trying."

Q: So it's important to be in that league of directors?

A: "Yes. I would like to be one of them. But I realize that I am who I am and pretty much, I am at the end of the spectrum so to speak, I am at the end of the trail. So I am trying to make it, as much as possible, to make the stories count, the ones I have left. It's an interesting challenge because of the marketplace, the change in the industry, the change in technology and I would like to get there. I don't know where, quite honestly. It's the idea of, I don't know if we really ever settle for anything. If settling is bad, we have to finish it, or not. And that may sound strange, but sometimes it is best to say, 'we are not finishing it. It doesn't want to be finished.'

"They ask me, 'do you see your films after?' And I say 'no.' No. A lot of them, some of them are very funny, but very often the emotional experience of making the picture just comes back to me too much."

Q: Speaking of the technological changes, would you do another 3D animated film after the critical success of "Hugo"?

A: "Yes. In a second. Except for - well put it this way they are doing it and it has been done - the camera or the rig getting more flexible, smaller. And then I would do everything in 3D."

Q: What about another movie for kids?

A. "I don't know if I have time ... the time isn't left, but if something like that comes up, I wouldn't mind trying again, there is no doubt.

"But I am trying to complete other things in my life now about certain statements, about life, American life, particularly the life I know."

Q: You have made some epic films about American life. What is on your mind at this moment?

A: "I always thought it was just life. But it is American. I am as much enamored with Italian cinema and British cinema and French and Russian and Japanese. Over the years, I have learned no, my culture, background and foundation is here. And it is the Roman Catholic of the mid-century, 20th century, in New York, which is very strong. And so it is really just trying to find out where you really belong and when you tell a story, where it is coming from. If it is really coming from who you are, that means you have to know yourself, which is pretty difficult, and that is what the journeys are."

Q: What about your next film, "The Wolf of Wall Street" with DiCaprio again? What will it say about our financial system?

A: "It's a reversal in values I think. Everything seems to be twisted and turned around. I thought that this country, in terms of what we were founded on, is the idea of a common good. And I don't see that when you unleash this kind of behavior. People are people, people are human and when you have the ability to do it, you go with it. And when it is unchecked, of course it is going to happen and it is not the first time ... But the problem is the reversal of values, I think, and not feeling the compassion for others and the people you have hurt."

Q: It's often noted that you work with the same actors - Keitel, Day-Lewis, De Niro, DiCaprio. Which of those did you learn the most from, or who learned the most from you?

A: "With De Niro and I, we struck out. He was really an actor, in a way, he was a working actor when I was introduced to him. And so in the '70s the pictures we made, up until the scenes we did in "Goodfellas" too, because he was only on that shoot maybe 15 days, maybe 12 days. But I think I learned the most from him.

"My mother would look at Bob and Harvey Keitel and was like, 'These are my son's friends,' she didn't think of them as major actors. 'These are my other sons.' And so I learned a lot during that period from how one could shape an actor or shape a performance, I should say. And I just applied it over the years to as many people as possible, with very good results, of course with Ellen Burstyn and Kristofferson, Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Newman, Tom Cruise, it goes on like that. And all the actresses, I think there have been 12 to 14 Oscar nominations for the actresses in my movies, and two of them have won, including Cate Blanchett.

"And then finding someone like Leo DiCaprio, who really liked my movies before we met, and being able to discover with him, it's another generation, you see. I guess we go so far, but he's got what's inside (pats his chest), and we agree with that. A heart."

Q: You've spent nearly 50 years making movies, and Hollywood is tough. How have you not become cynical? Any regrets?

A: "No I don't think they are regrets. I think you just have to be realistic as to what the elements of the situation are at this given time. In the '70s it was one way, by the early '80s it became something else, and then it was disappointing, greatly. Somehow by the late '80s I seemed to fall back into a situation where I was able to make more pictures, but during the '80s it was great struggling. And the industry had changed completely.

"I was very lucky for example, from 'Gangs of New York' on, to be involved with Leo DiCaprio, as I was with De Niro in the 70s, because with De Niro, with his stature as an actor, we were able to do some very difficult, thematic subject matter. And the same thing with Leo.

"But you do have to be aware, and you just have to utilize what is there. If this is gone, don't complain about it. Move on. If something's gone, move on and take advantage of what is there. That could be a 70mm epic or that could be the Internet."

Did California bride fake terminal cancer for ?dream wedding? donations?

Jessica Vega (Photo credit: Times Herald-Record )Twenty-five-year-old Jessica Vega is facing multiple felony charges after she allegedly faked a case of terminal cancer in order to get a free "dream wedding" and honeymoon.

The Times Herald-Record reports New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderm announced on Monday that an Orange County Grand Jury has indicted Vega on five counts of grand larceny and one count of scheme to defraud.

Vega, who had been living in New York until the indictment, has been extradited to authorities in California.

"By pretending to have a terminal illness, Vega inexcusably took advantage of the community's hearts and minds, and profited off of their generosity," Attorney Schneiderman said. "Our office will hold this individual accountable for fleecing the public through lies and deception."

In 2010, Vega claimed to be dying from acute myeloid leukemia and wanted to marry fianc? Michael O'Connell, the father of her child. Friends, family and total strangers rushed to support Vega, giving her a $1,200 wedding dress, wedding rings and even flowers for her wedding reception. The couple was then treated to a free honeymoon in Aruba.

However, it appears O'Connell was not in on the alleged fraud. ?When he contacted Dr. Dan Costin about Vega's treatment, he was told she had never been a patient. O'Connell then reached out to the Times Herald-Record to explain that the illness was likely a fake. The couple was divorced shortly after Vega was exposed. But in an even stranger twist, the couple is now once again reunited and has had ?a second child together.

"She's a good mom, and that's all that counts at the end of the day," O'Connell told the paper. "I want my kids to have their mother back."

He said he thinks the best course is for Vega to repay the wedding donors and seek mental health treatment, rather than jail time. Vega could face up to four years in prison for each felony if convicted.

COORDINATOR OF AQUATICS & ASSISTANT COORDINATOR FOR INTRAMURAL SPORTS AND FACILITIES

Areas of Responsibility

Coordinate and manage the aquatics facility and programs:
o Recruit, supervise, and thoroughly train lifeguards, instructors and student supervisors.
o Teach group swim lessons, CPR-Pro and Lifeguard Certification classes each semester.
o Maintain accurate records and data pertaining to user loads, program participation, assessment and budget.
o Manage the Recreational Swim Program including member recruitment and setting program guidelines.
o Conduct swim testing for all applicable sports clubs and summer camp programs.
Assist in the supervision and implementation of intramural sports:
o Produce select league schedules, tournament brackets, and single/dual event schedules.
o Assist in the purchase, inventory, and maintenance of all equipment and apparel used for intramural sports
o Conduct captain?s meetings and serve as commission for select intramural sports.
o Assist with mentoring and training intramural sports supervisors sport officials.
Provide support for recreation facility scheduling and daily operation:
o Assist with late evening and weekend coverage of assigned recreational events and the facility.
o Coordinate and implement a risk management plan that provides for the well-being of program participants.
o Assist with facility scheduling meetings and supervision of programs hours of open recreation.
o Coordinate marketing efforts and outcome assessment for all program areas under the position?s responsibility.
o Participate as an active member of staff by attending weekly departmental and divisional meetings.
o Take the lead role in organizing the department?s summer All Sports Recreation Camp.

Qualifications:? Bachelors? degree and two years experience with college / community aquatics or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.? Certified American Red Cross Lifeguard instructor and experience with swimming lessons and Water Safety Instructor certification preferred.??

Compensation:? Proposed start date for this position is July 1, 2012. This is a 12-month appointment with a salary range of $21,000 to $23,000 and includes on-campus housing and medical insurance. Weekend and evening work is often required. The position is viewed as a one to two-year paid apprenticeship and reports to the Associate Dean of Students/Director of Recreation Services.?

China blocks Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and many other websites citing a need to maintain social stability.

F0ws3r said the Anonymous China group consisted of 10 to 12 hackers, most of whom were not based in China, and had "hundreds" of translators working with them to hack the Chinese websites.

The hacker declined to give further details on the next round of attacks, except to say it may hit bigger targets.

The United States says it has suffered many high-profile hacking attacks that appear to come from China, often targeting human rights groups as well as U.S. companies. China maintains that it too is a victim of hacking attacks.

The various local Chinese governments whose websites were reportedly hacked last week could not be reached for comment and were operating normally on Monday.
