Chinese dissident art shown ahead of US inaugural

January 16, 2013 - 12:41 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Newseum will feature projections from Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei on the building's facade along Washington's Pennsylvania Avenue ahead of President Barack Obama's inauguration.

The Newseum says it will project images from Ai's works "Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn" and quotations about free expression beginning Thursday night. The projections will appear on a 74-foot-tall marble tablet that is inscribed with the First Amendment.

The evening projections will continue Friday and Saturday nights.

Ai's artwork is featured in a major exhibition at the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum through February. Ai helped design Beijing's Olympic Stadium but later drew scrutiny for his political activism. Late last year, he was fighting tax charges and was barred from leaving China.

In November, singer Elton John dedicated his only Beijing concert to Ai.
