A key state banking regulator, Linda Charity, has left the Florida Office of Financial Regulation, according to people in the banking industry, the Tampa Bay Business Journal reports.

Charity, who was director of the Division of Financial Institutions, left the post Wednesday, sources told the Business Journal.

?Linda Charity has done an excellent job in keeping our industry safe and sound for all Floridians,? said Alex Sanchez, president and CEO of the Florida Bankers Association. ?Being chief banking regulator, especially during recessionary time, is a very difficult job. Floridians could sleep like a baby every night because Linda, and others, too, made sure our banks were well-regulated.?

Charity began her career with the former Department of Banking & Finance in 1979, as an entry-level bank examiner in West Palm Beach, according to information on the OFR website. She was named director of the Division of Financial Institutions when the department was reorganized in 2003, and has served as interim commissioner of the OFR at least twice, in 2009 and 2012.
