Whisk Affair: Restaurant Review I Grand Trunk Road Festival ...

Grand trunk road has a lot of childhood memories attached with it. It was the road we used to travel on every year to see our grandparents and one of the best part of this journey was the food. Their were dhabas throughout the way and the type of food offered changed after every few kilometers of drive. Such is the food culture associated with this road.

Grand trunk road travels 2500 kilometers and passes 3 countries and seven states. It is south east Asia's oldest and longest road. It passes through Bangladesh, then to the northers states of India to Pakistan and then to Afghanistan.

The Movenpick hotel and spa is celebrating the culinary journey this road is associated with and having a Grand Trunk road festival in their restaurant ?The place. The festival features the food from the states of Delhi, Bihar, West Bengal, UP, Punjab and also the food from Pakistan and Afghanistan.

I was invited to the chef's table with a few fellow bloggers to sample this majestic fare. We were told how a team of chef's from each state has been formed to keep the authenticity of the dishes and under the expert guidance of their executive chef Thomas Joseph, everything on the menu was totally delectable.

We started off with the most interesting mix of Indian drinks with alcohol. I chose to order a Piru Pyala( Chef's recommended ) which was the most refreshing drink I have had in recent times. It was ?mix of guava juice with Tequila. The other drinks on the menu were Imli mojito, kala khatta diaquiri and sharabi nariyal and whoever ordered these drinks were happy as well.

After a quick tour of the buffet spread, I started off with the chaat counter. Their were dilli ki gol gappe and papdi chaat, both of which I enjoyed.
Their was a huge salad station, but looking at the spread I decided to give salads a skip and headed to the snacks . Mutton keema samosas and macchi ke kebas were my favorite for the day and apart from them there were Ghute kebabs and for the vegetarians bhutte ke kebabs, veg samosas and anjeer mava ki tikki.
My snacks platter :)
A live counter was set up to make the Begun Bhaja, a Bengali specialty which is basically made by frying egg plant ?till it is crisp from outside with a few masalas. Gobbled a few pieces of this and I was off to get another plate.
I was more than happy to see Haleem on the menu. I have heard many praises about this dish but never got a chance to taste it. This particular haleem was made in lucknowi style which I was told is bit different form the Hyderabadi version. I ?loved it and licked my bowl clean.
Although Litti choka was not on the menu, the chef specially made it for us and I am sure you'll not be disappointed ?if you ask for it.

?Their was a huge selection of main course dishes. I started with the non vegetarian fare which had ?Mutton do pyaza from Delhi, Murgh curry, a spicy gravy from pakistan, Macher jhol, a specialty from West Bengal, Gosht Dum Biryani from the royal kitchen of UP and Chooza Khas Makhani, a version of butter chicken.
I enjoyed these delicacies with roomali roti and butter naan.

For the vegetarians, there was nafasat ke kofte, aloo wadian, orai ki turai, paneer methi, karera and pindi chana masala.

This is my main course. I could not help but served a portion of all the dishes

It was time for dessert and what better than a warm gulab jamun and kesar phirni to wind up your meal. Gajar ka halwa could have been little better but considiring that the red gajar's are not available at this time of the year, I'll give it a pass.. Personally I am not a big fan of Khubani ka meetha as it is too sweet for my taste but I was told that this is the way it should be. So if you like this dessert this is the place.
If you want to taste the Authentic and delicious fare from the stretches of Grand Trunk road, Movenpick hotel and spa is the place. The festival ends on 21st of this month with a huge Sunday Buffet and is worth a visit ( or two ). Priced at 1200++ per person, It's my recommendation for this week. So go ahead and enjoy .
